Kazuko appears in this delightful and poignant short film as Mrs. Osida, an Osaka housewife on holiday in London. Sidonie is a Swiss au-pair mooching around town on her day off, feeling broke and homesick. She finds herself rescuing Mrs. Osida, a middle aged Japanese tourist, from a diabetic coma. The grateful woman proposes buying lunch, but insists they must visit Buckingham Palace first. They never get there, spending the whole day lost instead in areas way off the tourist trail - Stamford Hill, Brick Lane, White City. Filmed in richly textured black and white, these peripheral zones reveal an unexpected exoticism, populated by Australians, Ghanaians, Poles, Bangladeshis. With the only common language a few Queen lyrics (Mrs. Osida's karaoke favourites), the two women develop another form of communication, using Mrs. Osida's camcorder. The struggle for control of it, and the footage they both shoot - jazzy video colour that punctuates this monochrome journey - illustrate the growth of a peculiar intimacy and understanding. Both find they have something to learn from one another. |
