Born in Tokyo, Came to England in 1978. Music:Founded the Japanese female pop performance group FRANK CHICKENS in 1982, which had an independent chart hit with 'WE ARE NINJA' and has released 5 albums. They toured world wide including Japan, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Soviet Union and Europe. in 1998, they re-released 2 CDs ( 'Get Chickenized', 'Club Monkey') from Resurgence label. In February 2000, Ninja Tune label is going to release remix collection of 'We Are Ninja' including mixes by Neotropic, Fink and Pizzicato 5. The group recently has expanded to a 7 piece, and has been actively performing, including National Association of Youth Theatre Festival (with workshops) and "Hause Der Kulturen Der Welt" museum in Berlin in 1999. Made solo albums, with Steve Beresford and his piano orchestra 'KAZUKO HOHKI CHANTE BRIGITTE BARDOT' and 'LOVE IN RAINY DAYS'. |
Made a multimedia solo show 'TOOTHLESS' in 1998 supported by Arts Council Of England and London Arts Board. The show is based on the death of her mother &endash; a religious priestess who used preaching to develop her talent as a popular entertainer. This show was part of British Festival of Visual Theatre,99 and played for 2 weeks at Battersea Arts Centre in October. The show was chosen for Time Out's Critics' Choice.
Her new piece 'THE SHINING PRINCESS' commissioned by Bluecoat Arts Centre in Liverpool was also shown in the British Festival of Visual Theatre 99.
Received Artsadmin's artists bursary in 1999 and currently working on a new multi media show MY HUSBAND IS A SPACEMAN funded by London Arts Board due to be performed in 2000/2001.
Founder member of JAPANESE AMERICAN TOY THEATRE OF LONDON whose 'JAMES BONK IN MATT BLACKFINGER' was shown on Channel 4 in 1989/90.
Worked with Yorkshire-based IOU Theatre and also IMPOSSIBLE THEATRE.
Artistic Associate of Battersea Arts Centre since 1999.
Made a documentary feature called 'THE GOOD WIFE OF TOKYO' for Channel 4 with Kim Longinotto -about Japanese contemporary women in real life, featuring FRANK CHICKENS and her mother. The film was shown in 1993 on Channel 4 TV and at various international film festivals.
Presented her own TV series 'KAZUKO'S KARAOKE KLUB' for Channel 4 in 1989.
Made a piece 'MY HUSBAND IS A SPACEMAN' (directed by Rachel Davies) for "PER4MANCE "&endash; 3 minute series of performance art for Channel 4, broadcast on 2nd September 1999.
Published three books in Japan on her life in London &endash; 'LONDON NO YUKASITA (London Underfloor World)' in 1994 'LONDON KAIKAI (London Joy Joy)' in 1996, 'DEEP LONDON' in 1998. Currently writing on the fourth book "DIRECT LONDON (working title) " due to be published in February, 2000.
